The Old Burying Ground is located in the heart of Halifax, Nova Scotia.
It’s history began upon the day when Halifax was founded and the first burial occurred. For several decades, and it was the one interdenominational burying ground for the early settlement. There has not been a burial at the site since the mid- 1800’s, and today the Old Burying Ground is a peaceful greenspace nestled in downtown Halifax.
For almost forty years, The Old Burying Ground Foundation has worked to preserve and enhance this space. As a national, provincial and municipal heritage site, the Old Burying Ground will continue to exist for generations to come.
You can now contribute to this community legacy through the Bench Donation Program that provides individuals and organizations the opportunity to commemorate a person, place or event. Your gift will help maintain or replace the park benches within the Old Burying Ground, and enhance the experience for those who visit the site.
For a donation of $2,000, the Commemorative Bench Program at the Old Burying Ground will maintain a bench in honor of the recipient for a period of 10 years with an option to renew. The plaque will have the donor information in black on a brass coloured background. The donor will receive an official tax receipt for their gift from the Old Burying Ground Foundation, a registered Canadian charity.
Please Note:
- Donor identity is kept on public record.
- All benches are maintained in good order by the Old Burying Ground Foundation. This maintenance includes keeping benches clean, and ensuring clearly legible lettering on the donor plaque.
- After ten (10) years the donor will be given the first right of refusal for renewal. This offer of renewal will be issued 3 months before the expiry of the current contract.
- The donation is tax deductible and an official tax receipt will be issued to the donor by the Old Burying Ground Foundation.
- Placement of wreaths, flowers or other items or any modification to the bench or plaque will not be permitted.
